Time spent in hostel while at college is one of the best memories that millions of us carry through out our lives. It is indisputably the best phase of life. The energy of youth coupled with a complete sense of freedom creates one of the strongest positive impressions in our minds. The change is such that it adds a lot to an individual’s persona. It’s a journey from adolescence to adulthood. No tribute is enough to this phase of life.
Learning what experts call as ‘life skills’ is an integral part of every individual’s development during this phase. In the earlier years of school education what we essentially learn is how to study and play in a controlled environment. Teachers and parents are the ones who take decisions on our behalf for most part of school life. There is a systematic schedule for study, play and exams. There is hardly any room for innovation, creativity and relatively very less freedom to choose. All the emotional setbacks, if any, find a comforting hand in a parent or other elders in the family. All these things and many more that we take for granted suddenly undergo complete transformation or change when we enter our college life. If college demands staying in a hostel then the transformation is even bigger. A great degree of change management needs to be done at an individual level to cope with this sudden change.
Suddenly most of us find that we have more freedom then we ever thought, we have more liberty to decide what to eat, what to play, when to study, when to party and when to relax. For some the quantum of change itself is so huge that it transforms them completely. For some the effect is much slower and overwhelming. The stronger the emotional fortitude of an individual better is his or her adaptability to this change. The persons who cope better and adapt better are the ones who are able to use this opportunity to learn life skills that benefit them to a great extent in their post college professional lives. Some persons who are slow to adapt are the ones who also take more time to adjust in their professional lives.
A journey back to the college life is the central theme of my recent book FOSIL .
